CrossFit in the Cayman Islands & Oasis Land Development face more challenges
As the Oasis Land Development Ltd staff have been undergoing some serious hardcore training we are happy to learn about CrossFit Cayman, which is open in the Cayman Islands.
Oasis Land Development have been training hard in order to participate in some extreme events raising money for UK charities. Oasis just completed the Xtreme Storm in Southport, CEO & Chief Chairman of Oasis Mr. Ball took part in the event which was a 22 kilometer long, grueling challenge. The challenge comprised of crawling through fish guts and barbed wire, a 5 kilometer beach run, swimming in a rat infested lake (5 times!), being submerged into below freezing temperatures and then a further 30 obstacles designed and built by Ex-British armed forces. Oasis Land Development are yet to present the two charities with the cheques, and have so far collected thousands of pounds, Mr. Ball the owner of Oasis Land Development will double all donations raised to help Claire House Children’s Hospice & Queenscourt Hospice both in England. We will be uploading pictures of the cheque handover when we have collected all sponsorship money in the next few weeks.
Queenscourt Hospice ensures that life is for living for those with far-advanced and progressive terminal illness by providing symptom control and holistic care for patients and their families, along with educational support for their professional carers, to enable them to stay at home as far as possible.
Claire House Children’s Hospice provides respite, end-of-life and bereavement care for children and young adults with complex medical needs, up to the age of 23. Also there to support the whole family, providing support and counselling for as long as is needed.
Like the Xtreme Challenge wasn’t enough, we now have 2 brave Oasis Land Development staff who will be taking part in the world renowned Tough Mudder, which will take place in the UK in September 2013 raising money for NSPCC & Claire House Childrens Hospice, you could say we’re “getting muddy to help Children”. For those of you who haven’t heard of Tough Mudder, they advertise their event as “Probably the toughest event on the planet”. Tough Mudder events are 12 mile-long obstacle courses designed by the Special Forces, built to test your all around strength, stamina and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses and 1,000,000 inspiring participants worldwide to date, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world.
As we will be in the Cayman Islands during our Tough Mudder training program, we will be considering joining the Cayman Islands CrossFit team to keep up our stamina, ready for the muddy challenge which lies ahead.
Cayman CrossFit training is founded by husband & wife team Matt and Tarasa Barnett. Both the CrossFit Cayman owners are competing in the Reebok CrossFit Games 2013 this weekend in Guayaquil, Ecuador, which will take place from Friday 7th June 2013 to 9th June 2013.
After the weekend of grueling events, only one man, one woman, and one team from Latin America will receive invitations to the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games, from 22nd to 28th July in Carson, California.
With the growth of CrossFit globally, competition gets tougher every year.
Tarasa previously represented Latin America at the CrossFit Games three times – as a team competitor in 2010 and an individual the past two years – and is considered among the fittest women in CrossFit. She placed third in the open in April and is hoping to once again make it to the games in July.
She recently told Compass Cayman:
“Competing can be mentally challenging,” she said. “Through my experience, I feel like I have learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of. I also recently realised that CrossFit doesn’t define who I am and do it to have fun more than anything.”
Matt said he is pleased to have placed seventh in the open qualifier, after undergoing left knee surgery six months ago. He last competed in the CrossFit Games two years ago.
“Whatever they throw at me, I am ready for, be it a high skill or a heavy weight,” he said.
Oasis Land Development would like to wish the CrossFit Cayman Team the best of luck in their upcoming challenge!
